The World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker has become one of the most popular of Poker tournaments and has come a real long, long way from the time that it went on to first make its advent in the year 1970. The way it started was quite interesting when the some of the most experienced of Poker players decided to come together in Las Vegas to try their hand at the game and decide on who was the best amongst the best of them.

The idea of actually starting something like The World Series of Poker started way back in the year 1949. This was when Nick Dandalos asked Lester Binion to get together a really swell poker game at the Horseshoe Casino he was the owner of. That is when Johnny Moss was invited to be a part of the playing team. This was the battle that took place between the two players and started an idea in the mind of Lester Binion. That is how in the year 1970, the best of poker players were invited in order to be able to try their hand at wnining the jackpot. The best of players including Doyle Brunson, Johhny Moss, Brian Roberts and Crandall Addington to name a few got attracted to play the No Limit Texas Hold'em. This was made all the more exciting as it was in front of a live crowd. The twist that was thrown in was the spectators get to select the best player and Johnny Moss was chosen.

Then, again the tournament of The World Series of Poker was held in the year 1971 and the same winner declared. Then it got to become a shared purse event wherein not only one person got to take away the prize money. The registrations could be made by anyone for $10,000 and the satellite tournaments for the World Series of Poker saw numbers swell like nothing else that people had ever imagined.

However, the year 2003 changed all of this as Chris Moneymaker went on to win $2.5 million after buying himself a $40 satellite tournament online poker site seat at PokerStars. He had been an unknown player until the lucky win that he was able to garner for himself. He was able to defeat and leave behind the other 838 people to win the jackpot.

This kind of rag to riches story that dreams are made of was just the thing that was needed to propel the popularity of The World Series of Poker. There was plenty of coverage for it all over be it on the television or the newspapers and everyone sat up and began to take notice of the World Series of Poker.

In the following years the number of people who wanted to participate in the game went on to increase and so did the money. In the year 2008, the winner Joe Cada who was just 21 at that time went home with a win of $8.55 million.
