This web site is our home page, and a page on which we pay tribute to the best poker players in the world...
Johnny Chan
Johnny Chan has been nicknamed the Oriental Express. He lives in Las Vegas in Nevada in the United States. He originally comes from born in Guangzhou in China and was born in the year 1957. He actually never expected to be a professional poker player.
Johnny Chan has gone on to win ten bracelets and 27 Final tables and 43 Money finishes. This is certainly
Chan came to the United States along with his family in the year 1968 from Guangzhou to Hong Kong, then to Phoenix, Arizona. Then the family moved in the year 1973 to Houston, Texas where his family owned restaurants.
The first career option that was open to Johnny Chan was to continue in the family business. That is when on a trip to Las Vegas, Nevada he discovered poker. Then when he turned 21, he decided to stop studying at the University of Houston, where he was majoring in hotel and restaurant management, and take up professional poker.
Johnny Chan when asked about the phenomenal success that he achieved at the poker tables has said that it was mainly due to most poker players haven't really played against Asian players. This went on to give him the right cutting edge in the late 1980s,
That was when he was able to win the championship event of the World Series of Poker in two consecutive years of 1987 and 1988. He is the one of the very few players and no one has won so after him to win back-to-back WSOP Main Events.
Johnny "The Orient Express" Chan is quite superstitious about his wins and is known to have a lucky orange along with him on the table when he sits down to play poker. After seeing Johnny Chan and the lucky orange many other poker players also began to get some lucky fruit along with them. However, Johnny Chan has always gone ahead to deny the lucky orange being symbolic and stated that he carries it with him to get rid of the smoke filled smell in the poker rooms.
In the year 2005, Chan became the first player to win ten World Series of Poker titles for any individual player. This he was able to achieve by defeating Phil Laak in a Texas hold 'em event. He is competing at the moment with Doyle Brunson for second place with 10 World Series of Poker bracelets, and is second to only Phil Hellmuth. He was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in the year 2002 which again is a great achievement.
In 2008, Chan cashed for the first time in the main event since 1992, earning himself an amount of $32,166 for his 329th place finish. In 2010 Chan cashed in the main event taking 156th place for $57,102. Therefore, throughout his poker playing career he has been getting wins and great accolades to himself. As of the year 2010, his total live tournament winnings have been more than $8,500,000.[His 43 WSOP cashes account for $4,298,550 of those winnings.
